Public Transit Routing with Unrestricted Walking

چکیده

We study the problem of answering profile queries in public transportation networks that allow unrestricted walking. That is, finding all Pareto-optimal journeys regarding travel time and number of transfers in a given time interval. We introduce a novel algorithm that, unlike most state-of-the-art algorithms, can compute profiles efficiently in a setting that allows arbitrary walking. Using our algorithm, we show in an extensive experimental study that allowing unrestricted walking, significantly reduces travel times, compared to settings where walking is restricted. Beyond that, we publish the transportation networks of Switzerland that we used in our study, in order to encourage further research on this topic. 1998 ACM Subject Classification G.2.2 Graph Theory

Finding Multi-criteria Optimal Paths in Multi-modal Public Transportation Networks using the Transit Algorithm

We present an algorithm to find optimal routes in a multi-modal public transportation network. Our model takes into account many realistic features such as walking between multi-modal stations, transfer times, traffic days, multiple objectives and finding connections between geographical locations rather than just source and destination stations. In order to provide useful routing directions, w...

Transit and health: mode of transport, employer-sponsored public transit pass programs, and physical activity.

Increased provision of transit service and policy incentives that favor transit use can support a physically active lifestyle. We used the smartraq travel survey in metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia (in 2001-2002) to assess whether transit and car trips were associated with meeting the recommended levels of physical activity by using walking as a means of transportation. Additionally, we assessed a...

Walking to public transit: steps to help meet physical activity recommendations.

BACKGROUND Nearly half of Americans do not meet the Surgeon General's recommendation of > or =30 minutes of physical activity daily. Some transit users may achieve 30 minutes of physical activity daily solely by walking to and from transit. This study estimates the total daily time spent walking to and from transit and the predictors of achieving 30 minutes of physical activity daily by doing s...

Public transit, obesity, and medical costs: assessing the magnitudes.

OBJECTIVE This paper assesses the potential benefits of increased walking and reduced obesity associated with taking public transit in terms of dollars of medical costs saved and disability avoided. METHODS I conduct a new analysis of a nationally representative U.S. transportation survey to gauge the net increase in walking associated with public transit usage. I translate minutes spent walk...

Efficient Traffic Assignment for Public Transit Networks

We study the problem of computing traffic assignments for public transit networks: Given a public transit network and a demand (i.e. a list of passengers, each with associated origin, destination, and departure time), the objective is to compute the utilization of every vehicle. Efficient assignment algorithms are a core component of many urban traffic planning tools. In this work, we present a...
